Recently, while listening to a podcast about luck, I learnt about the Chinese framework called San Cai, that describes 3 types of luck. 

San Cai talks about Heaven Luck, Earth Luck and Human Luck; all equally important and influencial in your life. Here's what each of them represents:

• Heaven Luck is the (only) one where you have no influence over whatsoever. It's where you are born, the place you where born, your gender, the (dis)abilities you were born with, etc. 
  
• Earth Luck is about the macro decisions you make. It's your (chosen) environment such as where you choose to live, the job you pick, the person you're in a romantic relationship with, your friend groups, etc. 
  
• Human Luck is all about your micro decisions. it's your discipline, the day-to-day effort you make, the skills you develop, etc.

To make it more specific, it's very comparable to playing poker.

• When you're in the poker game, you don't choose your cards. You get the cards that you're dealt with. That's your Heaven Luck. You take it as it comes.
• You do however get to choose the poker table you're sitting at (and the position on the table, who you sit next to, which is apparently important when playing poker. This represents your Earth Luck.
• Lastly, you get to choose how you play the game and how you play your cards. You decide what moves you make and how much risk you take. Yes, this is the Human Luck.

Even if the cards you're dealt with are very unfavourable, you can still win the game. This is exactly how life works. Some things (mostly given to you at birth) where out of your control, however you can still make it work and win (BIG) in life.

You can't change your Heaven Luck, but you have so much influence on your Earth and Human Luck. The Chinese have known it all along, you can create your own luck. You can be Lucky On Purpose.
